Mobile Solutions For SAP

For you military guys out there, this isn’t about deploying to an FOB.  It’s about managing mobile devices and mobile workforces using SAP Mobility Solutions.

Understanding The SAP Mobile Strategy

If you’re a CIO or IT leader, or even a CEO, then you may have been wondering why mobility is a big deal and what you need to know to manage mobile devices and applications.

You will want to know the following 8 acronyms and their meaning:

  1. EMM: Enterprise Mobility Management
  2. MDM: Mobile Device Management
  3. MCM: Mobile Content Management
  4. MAM: Mobile Application Management
  5. TEM: Telecom Expense Management
  6. MOM: Mobile Operations Management
  7. MSM: Mobile Security Management
  8. MHD: Mobile Help Desk

Let's do a deeper dive into each one now:

EMM: or Enterprise Mobility Management

This is your firm’s overall approach to managing mobile devices, mobile enabled business processes and peacefully co-existing with the devices, such as iPads and iPhones, your employees already use.

  • MDM: or Mobile Device Management.

MDM is the ability to configure, update, or restore a Device.  MDM is about making and maintaining assurance that the device is in compliance and in a “business-ready state”.  This is separate and distinct from any application management or security capabilities (e.g., remote wipe/lock)

  • MCM: Mobile Content Management

Users want anywhere, anytime access to their files. Information technology managers want security, authentication, auditing, reporting, and, ultimately, some controls. Mobile content management gives users what they want and IT the controls that they require.  It allows users to get access to personal files of any type, any size, and from any location, and it gives IT the ability to securely distribute and control managed content

  • MAM: Mobile Application Management

MAM solutions enable you to manage internal, public, and purchased apps across employee, corporate, or shared devices in your organization.  Application Stores have a Catalog of applications and a rich set of features that provide the ability to distribute, track, update, and secure enterprise application over-the-air.

  • TEM: Telecom Expense Management

Organizations who have adopted mobile devices on a large scale need to optimize plan rates.  They need to have better visibility on how many devices are corporate liable vs. BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).  Avoid lines that are paid for but remain unused, under-used, or over-used.  “All you can eat” mobility plans are still cost-prohibitive and are not necessary for all employees.  Selecting a plan can and should be a thoroughly executed project.

  • MOM: Mobile Operations Management

Maintain control over QoS (Quality of Service).  Need visibility into the various components that exist in front of and behind the corporate firewall.  Organizations must have visibility into where a (potential) disruption is occurring in order to determine the best course of action for resolving the issue.

  • MSM: Mobile Security Management

Enterprise Mobile Security

Security for mobile needs to be considered from multiple angles, including:

  • Third-party compliance (including Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC))

  • Access to the device

  • Securing content on the device

  • Secure and trusted access to corporate systems

  • Breach/Loss/Theft mitigation

  • Corporate vs. personal data protection

  • MHD: Mobile Help Desk

Mobile workers, by definition, will typically be at remote locations and not near a help desk.  As technical issues arise (whether network, device, application, or end-user driven), the ability to remotely and in real-time troubleshoot a problem can have a direct impact on the top and bottom lines of an organization.

Wow, that's a lot of acronyms, even for an old military guy.  What should you take away from these data points?

The mobile landscape changes frequently!

  • Mobile devices are not created equally.

  • Plan to support “managed diversity”.

  • Mobility management begins with solid planning.
