SAP BW 731, BEx Query Designer, BEx Analyzer, Microsoft Word, FDA Compliance Training to CFR 21 Part 11 regulations |
Responsibility: Information Systems (IS) Group
- Consult with the Manager of Information Systems Group to understand Testing Requirement
- Received required internal FDA compliance training in CFR 21 Part 11 Regulations Compliance
- Reviewed Past Project Testing Materials for ideas
- Reviewed Customer Requirements Documentation and created Testing Trace Matrix to map test cases to individual requirements
- Received Log on Id’s to customers SAP BW Systems version 731
- Discovered the BW Developer had no system design documentation
- Reverse engineered existing SAP BW System landscape and used VISIO to create a system wide Architecture Drawing detailed enough to reveal development errors and issues. The drawing was said to be the “Best Thing we have ever seen around here”. The drawing came in handy later on when the developer was trying to solve critical design issues.
- Created a reusable format Test Script Template that was FDA Regulation CFR Title 21 Part 11 compliant. Some individual test scripts had over 200 test steps. 100+ test steps was average.
- Developed over 30 Test Scripts covering 3 functional business areas: Labor Efficiency, Scrap and Yield, Inventory.
- Conducted numerous informal passes of each Test Script. Bugs and Issues found with the development was reported to the IS Manager and decisions were made as to what priority the developer should give to fixing each issue found through my testing.
- Continued to work with the Manager and BW Developer and Co-Tester to continuously refine the triangle of Requirements, Development and Test Scripts through feedback.
- A Significant Improvement in SAP BW System quality was achieved through use of my formal test scripts.
- Due to the level or issues found, had to be detail oriented in the most meticulous way.
- Discovered other benefits of using a formal test script to evaluate Quality on multiple dimensions a person might be interested in measuring. Test Scripts are useful objective tools.
- Finished the project after several Formal Rounds of Testing and all test scripts PASSED with no issues found.
- Critical to the success of formal testing was the fact I was an experienced BW Developer writing the test scripts to check the work of a junior and offshore BW Developer.
Other Ways I helped the Customer: SAP BW Design/Development, Unix Scripting, SQL, ABAP programming
- Used my past SAP BW Developer and Software Engineering Experience to help the customer overcome several technical obstacles beyond my tester role.
- Customer was stuck on how to interface the BW system with the source system data. Recommended a Direct Connection. This was rejected by the source system owner. So then provided my Unix Scripting Expertise to advise customer on how an existing Unix Script was functioning and what customer would need to do to modify their unix script to pull data from the source system for this particular project.
- Used my knowledge of SQL programming and ABAP programming to read some 10 year old software routines and to explain to the customer and BW Developer what the routines were doing. A typical question is “How is this report generating this data”? So I would read the software, map it out, and then explain to the customer what it was doing. This helped overcome several technical points.
- In BEx Query, there were several Logic Statements (AND, OR) that the developer did not understand and could not develop. So used my software engineering experience to point the problem out to the developer and second to design a solution in Query Designer for the developer that would actually implement the required Logic. Later on in testing, added Tests for the correct implementation of the logic.
- It’s quite possible that without me stepping in to offer advise outside the tester role that the project could have stalled or failed at least twice. I can say that the end users would not have been happy with the output they would have received otherwise.

Responsibility: Project Manager, Internal Projects
- Identify problems with existing Consulting Kit solution
- Wrote Project Charter and pitched the project to the company President for approval.
- Project was approved with additional constraints added.
- Identified all stakeholders.
- Gathered Requirements from all Stakeholders
- Wrote the Scope Management Plan
- Performed Market Research from all National Telecom Providers
- Created a Work Breakdown Structure, WBS Dictionary and Activity List
- Created a Vendor Evaluation sheet based on the WBS Structure.
- Several rounds of visits to all Telecom providers in local area. Had each vendor to give me product, system and service demonstrations. Answer questions.
- Evaluated Vendors identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each vendor based on how close to and how many of each of our requirements they each could meet.
- Discussed findings with stakeholders.
- Scored each vendor to come up with an objective evaluation of each.
- Based on vendor data, put a time and cost estimate to the WBS.
- Used Critical Path methods of forward and backward pass to develop a budget and timeline for the project.
- Pitched the budget to the President for formal project approval and financial commitment.

- Selected the best vendor. No vendor could meet 100% of our stakeholder requirements. However only 1 vendor could meet all but 1 of our requirements related to signal. It was later found that we actually could get a signal in this particular location. So 100% of our requirements were actually met.
- Signed Contracts with vendors.
- Purchased and configured Smart Phones, Hot Spots and iPads.
- Set up Management Dashboards on Vendor websites.

- Performed Cross BU alignment and resolution on interdepartmental software issues
- Assist customer in developing departmental reporting requirements
- Attended weekly and daily conference calls with Beijing Development team to resolve team questions and to clarify software requirements
- Tested software deliveries for conformance to requirements and for bugs and errors
- Created training Powerpoints and gave training webinars on SAP Business Objects
- Customer wanted to know if it was possible to collect sales data on each unit sold rather than being summarized in bulk at the country level? I advised customer it was quite possible to collect transactional level sales data on each unit sold using SAP BW. Assisted customer to develop a list of 75 attributes and features that the end customer can see and are aware of such as hard drive size, color, etc. Used my management consulting hat to assist customer to create requirement specifications for the sale-by-sale attributes reports providing drill down and summary level reporting on specific products or product families. This was new information never before available to this customer. This allowed the customer to know what products were hot sellers and in which markets and what products to drop from the product line or which hot selling products to offer in new markets. This was information and a capability never before possible to this customer.
- Developed some best practices for the best way to create xCelsius Dashboards
- Developed some best practices for how to convert dashboard formats between xCelsius and Webi reports
- Developed a best practice for Requirements Gathering and Specification for xCelsius Dashboards and Webi Reports. My techniques reduced the requirements gathering process from typically a 2 month process with this customer to a 3 week process (a 5 week reduction).
Responsibility #3: Mature Group Business Unit (i.e. North America, Canada)
- Performed Cross BU alignment and resolution on interdepartmental software issues
- Read software specifications and Created Test Director test plans for upcoming Mature Group software release
- Advised customer what was possible or not possible for SAP BW & Business Objects
Responsibility #4: RSD group
- Attend daily and weekly conference calls
- Perform Cross BU alignment to resolve issues
- Created training material
- Trained co-workers
- Created internal Microsoft Access Cross BU KPI Database. The Customer’s Internal development team in China had actually implemented over 42,000 different KPI’s. Many of them were repeats of the same thing with slight variations in definitions. The question is how do you get a handle on 42,000 KPI’s for 1 company? I inventoried all the requirements documentation, all the Webi Universes, all the Webi Reports, all the embedded formulas within the delivered Webi Reports and I created an Access Database called the Cross BU KPI Database. I also used 1 intern to help me gather this information. The database allows people to search for a particular KPI, identify all the different variations of that KPI, identify all the different reports each KPI was located in, identify which BU owned that report as well as gave end users the ability to update descriptions for any given KPI. The database allowed me to upload information in bulk or 1 KPI at a time. The database also allowed Developers to identify which reports would be affected by changes to any particular KPI.
- This customer did not have a project folder which is a basic element of any project. Because of this the customer was suffering from information hiding and had a terrible time keeping all team members updated and almost no one had the latest revision of any documentation. So I made a preliminary list of folders I recommend the customer should have in a project folder. I also asked every team member what folders they though they needed or would like to see. I then organized the folder list into logical software releases. I then identified a globally visible publicly available internal database. I then asked my intern to create all the different project folders on my list in the order as I had it. The next task was to load a critical mass of project documentation into the project folder. This is still ongoing even though I am not there anymore.

Grace Kennedy Jamaica, is the largest grocery store chain in Jamaica with a multi-national distribution chain. Customer needed a Business Objects Management Dashboard to automate and cut cost of reporting day-to-day operating activity and this is what my team proposed, designed, developed and successfully delivered.
A Business Intelligence - Business Objects management dashboard requires understanding of the customer’s business, the metrics the customer uses to manage their business and the customer’s ERP systems.
