6 SAP Event Management Tips

What happens if the train doesn't arrive on-time?

In this case, the non-event, i.e., not arriving on-time, is a negative event, and you can use SAP Event Management to alert the entire rail management system to the fact the train did not arrive on-time.

Why would you want to do this?

The short answer is to achieve higher utilization of your rolling stock.

Here's a little statistic I find astounding:

In 1960, the average rail operator was doing well to utilize 5% of his rolling stock on any given day.  Why such poor performance?  Because there was no way to keep track of each individual piece of rolling stock using automation.  Instead, there were spotters who were stationed at every train station and at other points who would visually track and report the location of equipment as it passed through.  This led to very poor system performance.

With today's digital tracking capabilities, using technologies such as RF-ID tags, IoT and advanced train signalling equipment, train operators can know where everything is, at all times.  SAP Event Management is a key player in this drastic operational improvement.

With SAP Event Management, you can:

  • Interact with your customers to reduce work/time/costs...

  • Allow your Customers to report status/actions like Free for Disposition.

  • Allow you to let your Customers interact and change objects in source systems.

  • Reduce effort due to direct communication with your customer instead of using Mail, Fax or Phone.

  • Use SAP Event Management (EM) to survey:

    SEQUENCING,
    TEMPORAL,
    QUANTITATIVE,
    and QUALITATIVE CORRECTNESS

of your overall Business Process Execution by controlling the expected business process steps and comparing it with the predefined business process steps

  • Use SAP EM to react automatically according to predefined ”what-if” scenarios in case of non-occurrence and overdue events.

This is just a small sampling of the use of SAP Event Management system within the area of Rail Operations Management

SAP EM is used in many other areas and is, frankly, under exploited.

Our SAP EM consultants can show you how to exploit SAP EM to energize your Supply Chain Management processes.
