When trying to Master SAP Business Warehouse, it is as much about knowing what to do as it is about avoiding mistakes. Don't make the following mistakes:
- Not using meta chains to link multiple related process chains.
- Another SAP BW mistake, not physically partitioning infocubes and leveraging multicubes to take advantage of parallel processing or keeping the seek times low.
- Not establishing and using a robust naming convention early in the project.
- Not investigating, selecting and installing the applicable and available SAP BW Business Content.
- Not including all the correct DTP's (Data Transfer Processes) in a process chain and having them fail as a result.
- Not properly partitioning infocubes within the infocube itself, say for a finance cube, there should be about 18 partitions for a cube that holds 1 year of data on a 16 period year.
- Not making the document number a line item dimension
- Not enhancing and optimizing the business content for the clients needs
For example, the sales cube comes with a multicube attached to it, but the consultants need to enhance the data flow and model to establish physical partitioning; often implementations that might use the business content, only enhance it to include new fields.
SAP BW Consultants often assume the business content has an optimal design when it often does not after data is loaded into it.
- Not loading historical data for analytical purposes.
- Not using authorization variables to automate the variable screen, such as company code selections.
Security may be established, but then the user still has to go through the step of selecting his company code even though they typically only have one option.
- Not having a Project Folder for storing all project documentation into.
- Not having a Project Charter.
- Not having a Stakeholder Management Plan.
- Not having a Scope Management Plan.
- Not estimating project durations.
- Not having a Schedule Management Plan.
- Not having an overall Project Management Plan.
- Believing that you need only 1 Go-Live. Rut Row.
